VUKA (meaning “to rise” in Zulu) is the genesis of creation, where stories are shared and truths are told, no matter the circumstances. In VUKA, we create in a supportive community where stories form organically through a collaborative process that welcomes devised creation. Deeply rooted in oral African traditions, VUKA is a place where your truth begins.
For the 2024/25 season, VUKA continues to support multidisciplinary arts practices, encouraging the spirit of investigation, discovery, experimentation, and trust. Back to welcome its second cohort, this paid creation program invites Black self-identified artists to develop a one-person show over the course of two seasons, starting from their own disciplines.

Program Highlights:
- Private Performance: The unit will conclude with a 10 minute sharing of artistic work at Theatre Passe Muraille in February 2025. Further expansion and development of the piece will happen in the 25/26 season.
- Honorarium: Receive an honorarium of $2200 for participating in the program. Enjoy a paid artist-led residency with provided space and production/technical support. This payment will be done in two payments – before the start of the program, and upon completion of it.
- Promotional Support: Gain promotional marketing support, including an artist profile on the TPM’s VUKA page and promotion on social media platforms.

- Showing: February 1 2025
- Debrief: Feb 2 2025
- Week-long active debrief: April 15-22 2025 (Dates TBC)
How to Apply:
Submit your application through written text or via or video submission, to aprill@passemuraille.on.ca with the subject line “VUKA Submission”.
Include the following:
- Cover Letter/Video: A one-page cover letter or a 3-5 minute video (YouTube or Vimeo links) that answers these prompts:
- How do you describe your current artistic practice?
- What are the identified gaps in your artistic practice? What are your current learning objectives in your creative and/or producing practice? How do you imagine this program and VUKA supporting you in filling these gaps?
- A short description of an idea/concept you are interested in working on through the program.
- CV or Biography: A one-page document detailing your experience and background.
Interviews will be happening the week of October 21 2024, and all participants will be notified the week of November 1 2024.
