Description

KTA PLAYLAB

Kingston Theatre Alliance is proud to present its newest sector development initiative, the KTA Playlab! Modeled after the Barrie Theatre Lab, we will be hosting an evening once-a-month for playwrights who want to have their scenes, plays, monologues, etc. read out loud. We want to read anything and everything you’ve got, so send it our way and we will find a time during a Playlab to have it heard!

Here’s how it works:

Playwrights from the Kingston area are invited to send in any and all works they wish to be read to playlab@kingstontheatre.ca. These plays will be read by staff to ensure the content is appropriate and to determine during which Playlab each piece can be read. Each playwright will then be notified of their Playlab date based on availability.

On the evening of the Playlab, community members will be invited to join a Zoom call. During the call we will assign voluntary readers from the community to characters in the play. The playwright will then have the opportunity to say anything they wish us to know prior to the reading beginning, and then, we start!

After the reading is completed, there will be time for the playwright to ask any questions they may have to the community. The floor will then be opened to any further feedback from the community members at the reading. A note on this feedback: although we appreciate any and all feedback, we would like it to be directed at aspects useful to the playwright. For example, it would not be useful to tell them that you didn’t like something without mentioning exactly why you are making that critique. Start with positives, and always offer notes that will take the work further, then the playwright can keep whatever feedback that they find may be useful in furthering their work.

These events will be free for all to attend. The KTA Playlab is being presented as a development opportunity for playwrights so, the focus will be on working the script itself rather than the performance aspect of the show.

So, come one, come all, actors and playwrights alike, to the KTA Playlab. Stay tuned for more information about our first iteration coming soon!
