Since 2002, Playwrights Guild has been honouring excellent in new playwriting. Do you have new script you would like to have considered for PGC’s annual Tom Hendry Awards for playwriting? Peer assessment panels review scripts in a range of categories. Submissions open to PGC members, so renew or sign up today! 

Carol Bolt Award

Submit an original full-length play which had a professional premiere between March 2, 2024 and March 1, 2025.

Comedy Award

Submit a new comedy which has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1, 2025.

Dan School of Drama & Music Musical Award

Submit a new musical which has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1, 2025.

Drama Award

Submit a new drama which has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1, 2025, and has not been published.

RBC Emerging Playwright Award

Submit an original full-length play which has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1, 2025. This award is only open to Supporting or Student members of PGC.

Theatre for Young Audiences Award

Submit a new, unproduced or recently premiered theatre for young audiences (TYA) play. If premiered, production dates must be between March 2, 2024 and March 1, 2025.

 

The awards offer generous cash prizes and finalists and recipients are recognized in a ceremony that takes place in the fall each year. Submission fees of $24.50.  Exception:  RBC Emerging Playwright Award $21.50.

Detailed criteria will be posted in January 2025, and submissions will be accepted Feb 1 to Mar 1, 2025.  If you have questions, please email the Program Manager, Mindy Doherty Griffiths.

The awards are named after Tom Hendry (1929-2012). He was one of a small but mighty group of founders members of PGC.  Hendry was a co-founder of the Manitoba Theatre Centre (1958), Toronto Free Theatre (1972) and the Banff Playwrights Lab (1974).
