Description
Do you have a creative idea that could work in a non-traditional environment?
Are you looking to showcase your craft in front of warm audiences among a group of artistic peers?
Deadline to submit is December 23rd, 2024.
We will aim to have conversations with shortlisted projects early January 2025.
The Treading Theatre Project aims to provide an accessible platform for contemporary performance-based artists to push creative boundaries and develop interdisciplinary skills towards a maturing, innovative, and diverse practice. Through traditional, non-traditional, and experiential performance, we invite local audiences to engage on a personal level and grow with the participating artists.
The festival will consist of ONE full-length “Mainstage” production and THREE smaller “Satellite” performance pieces. The Mainstage and each Satellite production will receive a presentation fee of $13000 and $4000, respectively. In addition, we will also offer:
- Some producing support
- Some marketing support
- A festival-run box office
- The Schneider Haus venue
- Check-ins with Maria and Ciarán during your rehearsal and development process
We are looking for unique and robust expressions of theatre from artists we know and artists we don’t. We will consider world premiers as well as your interpretation of established work. We encourage artists to contemplate the space in which the festival will take place (Schneider Hause amphitheatre as well as spaces inside the surrounding buildings) and envision their productions in response to / adapted for the site which will host them. We want to see these non-traditional performance spaces animated in imaginative and innovative ways.
Please note that the outdoor amphitheatre space (pictured on treadingtheatreproject.weebly.com) may require performers to have strong mature voices and that indoor spaces have a maximum audience capacity of only 15 people at a time.
Applicants are invited to come to Schneider Haus to view and walk-through the space(s) during the day on December 4th and 5th.
Both Mainstage and Satellite productions can be any theatrical form with each category of performance pursuing excellence while reflecting the budget provided in duration, scale, and scope.
We will be reviewing submissions based on:
- The quality of the work proposed
- Originality and theatricality of the concept
- The festival’s capacity to support the project well
- The proposal’s capacity to be fully realised into a stage-ready production by May 2025
- Any connection to Waterloo Region
Although this is a theatre festival and we appreciate Well Made Plays, we are equally curious about inter-artistic and other expressive forms of performance. We are interested in what interests YOU, artistically.
This is a 2-phase submission process. Part one is your project proposal. Part two will be informal meetings with shortlisted applicants so that we can understand your project better.
Please send us:
- A proposal indicating what the project is, why you want to do it, and how it fits within the festival as outlined above. This should be approximately one page. There are no wrong answers.
- Any special accommodations that you may need for us to support your success.
- A brief artist statement and a resume
- Up to ten minutes of artistic content that directly relates to your proposal (IE: up to 10 pages of text or 10 minutes of audio/visual material or a reasonable combination of these).
Audio/visual materials can be shared through Google Drive or platforms like YouTube, Soundcloud, etc.
Shortlisted projects will be asked to provide a simple working budget in January.
