Description
The Stephan G. Stephansson Artist Residency Award was established in 2024 through an agreement between the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society (SGSIS) and the Icelandic National League of North America (INLNA). The Award is funded by the INLNA and administered by The Buttermaker's House Management Committee.
Location
The Buttermaker’s House is an artist residency which first opened its doors in 2022. It’s a meticulously restored heritage farmhouse initially built in 1913. Fully renovated with new furniture and appliances which maintain a classic aesthetic while providing modern comfort. The house has a bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bathroom, and a small studio for working. The house sits on a tree-lined lot along the slowly flowing Medicine River in the vibrant and dynamic rural community of Markerville. It’s an excellent place to rest, reflect, create, and connect.
Amount of Award
With financial support from the INLNA, six weeks of residency time will be made available for 1-3 artists per year based on their eligibility. Number of awards and the length of the stay will be determined based on the applications received. Deadline for submission is March 1st with the recipient(s) being announced April 1st.
Eligibility
- Artists with Icelandic Heritage or,
- Artists working on projects relating to, or inspired by Iceland, its people, culture, and/or environment
- Open to all disciplines of art. Feel free to contact SGSIS with questions about work space.
- Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply
The Award will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria:
- Project description, 500 words or less on the project, your goals for the residency, and any desired community engagement.
- 150 words or less on the connection the artist or the project to Iceland
- Applicant has applied for Buttermaker's Artist in Residence Stay
