Description
Deadline: Ongoing
Intermission publishes artist perspectives, original journalism, spotlight profiles, original drama, and audio and video content.
We typically steer clear of theatre reviews, traditional previews, and basic Q&As and instead focus on content that can’t be found elsewhere.
The following section includes guidelines if you want to submit a piece of drama (an excerpt of a full-length play or a short play), see below.
At Intermission, we’re big fans of reading plays. We want to create greater access to this kind of creative writing, so we are expanding our content to include publishing short original drama. We accept excerpts of longer plays as well as short plays.
Editorial focus:
Intermission’s focus is on high quality writing, in the vein of the New Yorker or McSweeney’s, if they featured Canadian theatre writing. We’re looking to hear from both established playwrights and from new, original voices, and we’re open to most styles, genres, and forms (see exceptions below).
What we accept:
- Excerpts from full-length plays
- Short plays
- Monologues
- Musicals or plays with music (note: we can only publish text—please do not include audio recordings)
- Adaptations of work in the public domain
What we don’t accept:
- Theatre for young audiences, sketch comedy, radio dramas, and film screenplays
Translations or adaptations of work not in the public domain
Guidelines:
- Pieces can be up to 2000 words long
- Pieces should primarily be written in English, although they can include other languages
- If submitting an excerpt, please include a short synopsis of the play
- Only send previously unpublished work
- Only send previously unproduced work; readings or workshops are okay
- Do not send anything that includes song lyrics or poems that are not written by you
- Only send in one piece at a time; please wait until we have responded to your initial submission before sending another
- Send your submission as a Word or Pages attachment; please no PDFs
- Put “PLAY SUBMISSION” in your email subject heading
If your piece is accepted, it will go through our regular copy editing process. Intermission will hold exclusive publishing rights for 90 days, after which rights will revert back to the playwright. All copyright will remain with the playwright.
