Are you someone who loves writing short stories? Have you been wanting to share your short story (or stories) with others or get recognized for your writing? If so, we'd love to introduce you to the Next Generation Short Story Awards, a brand new not-for-profit awards program open to authors writing original short stories (5,000 words or less per story) in English.

Brought to you by the Next Generation Indie Book Awards (NGIBA) and Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group (IBPPG), the 2025 Next Generation Short Story Awards offers over 30 categories, and is open to all authors, even first time authors, in the U.S., Canada, or internationally.

Take advantage of this exciting opportunity and have your short story considered for a cash prize, gold medal or trophy, invitation to the annual NGIBA gala, literary exposure, inclusion in an annual anthology, and recognition as one of the top short stories written this year!

The Next Generation Short Story Awards is accepting submissions from all short story writers. Enter and pay by February 27, 2025, to be a part of the 2025 awards program!

The Next Generation Short Story Awards is an esteemed not-for-profit awards program set up to honor, recognize and award the top short stories each year and the creative minds behind the words. The 2025 awards program offers over 30 categories and is open for entries now to short story writers around the world who have written original and unpublished works in English.

We encourage writers of all ages and genres to enter your short story (5,000 words or less) so that you can earn recognition and receive awards and other benefits from having an award-winning story!

The Next Generation Short Story Awards will honor and award 1 Winner and 3 Finalists in each of the over 30 categories and 3 Grand Prize Winners from all entries submitted this awards year.

Awards given to the Winners and Finalists of the 2025 Next Generation Short Story Awards are:

Grand Prize Winners:

1st Place: $500 cash prize, 1st Place Grand Prize Winner trophy, gold medal, an invitation to attend the NGIBA awards gala, story and author bio published in the Anthology, and a complimentary copy of the Anthology.

2nd Place: $300 cash prize, gold medal, an invitation to attend the NGIBA awards gala, story and author bio published in the Anthology, and a complimentary copy of the Anthology.

3rd Place: $200 cash prize, gold medal, an invitation to attend the NGIBA awards gala, story and author bio published in the Anthology, and a complimentary copy of the Anthology.

Winners:

Winners of each of the over 30 categories will receive: $75 cash prize, gold medal, story and author bio published in the Anthology, and a complimentary copy of the Anthology.

Finalists:

Author name and title of story mentioned in the Anthology, Anthology available to purchase at half price.

Winners and Finalists will also receive:

  • Exposure for a full year as a Winner or Finalist at Next Generation Short Story Awards.
  • Social media coverage
  • The opportunity to display Finalist or Winner gold award sticker imageon their story, website or social media.
  • Other benefits of an award-winning story such as potential exposure and accolades.

The entry deadline date for the 2025 awards program is February 27, 2025.
