Julie Salverson

Julie Salverson writes about being a witness to violence. She is the daughter of writer George Salverson and granddaughter of twice Governor General Award winner Icelandic Canadian Laura Goodman Salverson. For her theatre company Second Look Community Arts Resource in Toronto (1980’s) she created plays with local communities. Her subjects address living with joy while facing violent histories. Plays include Boom (a clown play about landmines); Beyond the End of Your Nose, a disability adventure (with Patricia Henderson); Thumbelina, The Haunting of Sophie Scholl, The Pied Piper Returns and the opera Shelter. Her work has been performed across Canada, the US and Thailand. She is Professor Emerita, Queen’s University Drama; author of many essay and editor of several collections and nonfiction books Lines of Flight: an atomic memoir (2016) and A Necessary Distance: Confessions of a Scriptwriter’s Daughter (2024). She has won honorable mentions and been shortlisted for the CBC nonfiction award.
