Member wins Toronto Fringe New Play Contest

PGC member Rhoma Spencer has won the 2026 Toronto Fringe New Play Contest with her play Danse Macabre. The award includes a presentation at this year’s Fringe Festival, where the production runs July 3–12 at the Tarragon Theatre Mainspace.

Set in the charged heartbeat of a mas camp on the eve of Toronto Carnival, Danse Macabre brings feathers, wire, and memory into collision. Moving beyond spectacle, the play explores the intersection of culture, queer identity, and resistance. It offers a bold, unflinching examination of anti-Black racism, woven through the lived experience of “playing mas.” Both intimate and expansive, the work speaks to heart and history—illuminating the deeper ideology behind why Black Lives Matter.
