W.O. Mitchell (1914-1998). Over his sixty-year writing career W.O. Mitchell wrote short stories, novels, magazine articles, radio and television plays, stage plays and film scripts. His work won numerous awards, including two Stephen Leacock awards and three ACTRA awards. He is best known for his Jake and the Kid stories and Who Has Seen the Wind, a Canadian classic that has sold a million copies. In the 1970s Mitchell turned his hand to writing stage plays. Back to Beulah, in 1976, won the Chalmers Canadian Play Award. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Canadian Playwrights Guild and co-chaired its organizing committee. His plays, which have been produced by most of the professional theatres across Canada, continue to attract both amateur and professional productions–most recently Rosebud Theatre’s 2019 production of The Kite and ATP’s 2024 production of The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon.
