Clem Martini was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Martini is a graduate of the University of Calgary (BFA), and was among the very first playwriting cohort to graduate from the National Theatre School, (Playwriting Program) and The National Screen Institute/National Film Board (DramaLab Program). Over the past decades he has written plays, books, and operas that have been produced and published nationally and internationally. His plays include Illegal Entry, The Life History of the African Elephant, The Replacement, The Extinction Therapist and Cantata: Rumours of My Crazy Useless Life. His books include The Blunt Playwright, Bitter Medicine, The Unravelling and The Comedian. A Past President of The Playwrights Guild of Canada, he is a three-time winner of the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for his plays, two-time winner of the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Professor Emeritus of the University of Calgary.
