Born in Detroit and raised in Montreal, Bill Zaget is an “ancient” playwright, writer of dark slipstream fiction, performance-poet, and an actor (as Zag Dorison). He was very active as a member of Playwright’s Workshop Montreal in the 1970s, where he had some of his plays workshopped and given staged readings. An early play, Landspit, was performed at the Quebec Drama Festival in 1974, for which William Hutt presented him the Sally Starke Prize for Promising New Talent. Shooting ahead some decades—in and out of the biz—His play Rarebit Fiends was a hit at the Edmonton Fringe. His solo show, Renfield or, Dining at the Bughouse, based on his award-winning short story of the same name, was performed in Los Angeles at a major Stoker centenary event in 1998 and at more recent Montreal and Victoria Fringe Festivals. He was a regular contributor of short theatre pieces in the early years of the Rhubarb Festival of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto. After having lived there for many years, he returned to Montreal in 2015. He continues to act and write plays and stories (some of which have been published in anthologies).
