Born in Saskatoon, Des moved at six months of age to Winnipeg, then eight years later to Comox, Summerside and finally Ottawa. He currently resides in Vancouver where he has worked as a director, actor, lighting designer and CanStat certified Alexander Technique teacher. He writes plays in partnership with Dawn Moore. Their first play, a one-act version of Waiting for Garbo, was presented at both the 2016 Edinburgh and Vancouver Fringe Festivals. Their second, Draining the Swamp, was presented at the 2017 Vancouver Fringe Festival and then held over at the Havana Theatre. The full-length musical version of Waiting for Garbo premiered at Presentation House Theatre in April 2022.
Des was previously the Artistic Director of Novus Theatre for whom he directed The Dance of Death, The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Jennie’s Story, Molly’s Dream and Elizabeth – Almost By Chance a Woman. Canadian Gothic was picked by the Vancouver Sun as one of the best ten theatre productions of the year for 1999.
Other Directing Credits: Top Girls, The Roaring Girl, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Waiting for Godot, The Seagull, Dracula, Mad Forest, Arabian Nights and The Tao of Ron. He has twice been nominated for a Jessie Richardson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design for Haunted House Hamlet (the original Tamahnous production) and Scary Stories (Novus Theatre).
Acting credits include: The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew, Laura, Bus Stop, Suicide in B Flat, Don’t Drink the Water, The Three Sisters and The People We Know. He has a BA in Fine and Performing Arts from SFU and an MFA in Theatre Directing and Production from UBC.
