Hi! I’m Elena (or Eli) Belyea, a queer/trans writer, actor, and producer born and raised in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton, Treaty 6 territory). I’m artistic director of independent theatre company Tiny Bear Jaws which I run with my creative partner Tori Morrison. My work has been produced across Turtle Island and internationally (including Austria, Berlin, Hungary, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, and Calgary). I’m a graduate of the University of Alberta and National Theatre School of Canada (Playwriting) and an alumna of Nightwood Theatre’s 2016-2017 Write from the Hip Playwriting Unit. In 2018-19, I was Tarragon Theatre’s RBC Emerging Playwright-In-Residence through which I developed my play SMOKE. SMOKE was published by Playwrights Canada Press in Fall 2022 and won the 2022-23 Sterling Award for Outstanding Independent Production (Edmonton). In 2024, I was a member of Spindle Films’ inaugural Trans and Non-Binary Film Mentorship program.
