Rewriting the Canon: Adaptation for Marginalized Writers with Makram Ayache

This weekend intensive course invites marginalized writers who are interested in adaptation of the theatrical canon. We will have facilitated discussions, activities, and events as we contemplate the philosophies of adaptation; questions like:

• “why should we engage with the classics?”
• “How faithful should we remain to adaptation?”
• “Really, Shakespeare again?”
• “What is the cannon and who gets to define the canon?”

and so on, will be explored. Writers will bring in a completed or nearly completed adaption that they are working on. We will have an opportunity to workshop an idea and a scene for each writer, alongside facilitated writing activities throughout the weekend. This will provide an opportunity for writers to continue the development of their works while engaging in dramaturgical, cultural, and philosophical ideas around the nature of being a marginalized writer working with the canon.
