Hengameh E Rice

Hengameh E. Rice are a writing team, with Hengameh born in Shiraz, Iran and Rice born in Edmonton, Alberta. Working together for the past ten years, they developed and wrote Anahita’s Republic, a story from inside the women’s movement in Iran. The play’s world premiere in Toronto in 2023 in a Bustle & Beast production garnered Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Scenic Design. The play’s Edmonton premiere in 2023 garnered Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards nominations for Outstanding Independent Production, Outstanding Performer in a Leading Role, and Outstanding Score. Currently developing their second play, a radical re-telling of the stories of Fatimeh and Maryam from the Quran, the writing and producing pair are committed to creating works that explore worlds rarely shown on Canadian stages.
