Lana Lovell

Lana Lovell is a Toronto-based writer, playwright, producer, documentary media artist, and entrepreneur. Her artistic practice in theatre draws on factual material to tell stories about connection, events and people. She writes plays grounded in Canadian social realities, particularly Black Canadian life. Most recently, she has written three plays that explore untold stories of Black Canadians and guide audiences through fractured histories and private reckonings. From 2021 to 2022, she was SummerWorks Theatre’s Digital Producer, collaborating with performance artists to create digital presentations for the festival. In 2019, she wrote and produced Elbow Room, a play about women in the work force, for the Toronto Fringe Festival.

Lovell has won awards for documentary filmmaking (Underground, Resilience, The Incomparable across North America, including at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival, Innis Town Hall, University of Toronto, DOC Night Out, International Black Film Festival of Nashville, International Black Film Festival (London, England), International Film Festival Trinidad and Jackie Richardson), broadcast on CBC, Bravo Television, and Omni. Her work has screened in Tobago, Harbourfront Centre – Studio Theatre, OBHS International Film Festival, Hamilton Film Festival, Mid Atlantic Black Film Festival (Documentary Semi-Finalist), and Hot Docs International Film Festival.

Across film, theatre, and digital media, her practice interrogates power, absence, and the politics of storytelling.
