Raised on a farm in Lowville, Ontario, Stephen Johnson attended school in Burlington, Guelph, Toronto and New York City. In the 1990s, he worked with scientists, community volunteers and theatre professionals in the Environmental Theatre Workshop, Hamilton, Ontario, creating scripts on environmental topics for family audiences. Other works developed over the years include: Juba, produced in Toronto and Portsmouth (NH) and on CBC radio; an adaptation of the Capek Brothers’ The Insect Play; A Little Grief (Goes a Long Way), a poem cycle; Six Puppets and a Fish (not to mention the Fisherman), a play about the environment for young people; and Faker, a short piece on spiritualist Margaret Fox for solo performer (and ghost). He has been a producer, director and dramaturge for university theatre, for the collective Handmade Performance, and taught theatre and film at McMaster University, and the University of Toronto. He is now retired.
