Judith Thompson is a playwright, director and actor and teacher. She was artistic director of R.A.R.E. theatre for ten years, creating theatre with communities who wanted to be seen and heard through the medium of theatre, including artists with Down Syndrome, spinal cord injuries, deafness, blindness, and brain injury. She has over a dozen published plays, all of which have had productions all over the world in many languages. She is the author of two feature films, and numerous radio plays. She has been a Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph for the last thirty years.
She is an officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Royal Society, and the winner of many awards, including two Governor General Awards, a Dora, Toronto Arts Award, Epilepsy Ontario award, Walter Carsen Award, Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award.
Her play In Crow’s Field, will be published by Cormorant Press in October 2025, and her latest play, Queen Maeve, will be produced at Tarragon theatre in March 2026.
