CBI 25/26 – Sherry MacDonald & Asta Honkamaa

PGC members have been paired up with an international playwright to share their work and discuss the craft of playwriting with one another. You can tune into these live events and get a glimpse of what these theatre creators have been up to!

About the Playwrights:

Sherry MacDonald is an award-winning playwright from Vancouver, Sherry’s plays have been staged in various cities in Canada and the U.S. and include The Seduction Theory, Hot Milk, The Stone Face, The Duchess of Alba, Iraqi Karaoke, Cowgirl Jane, Til Death Do Us Part and The Black Shawl. Her current project is a musical titled Ballad of Ballantyne Pier, for which she also wrote the song lyrics. A filmmaker, her short films have been screened locally and internationally and include Blindspot and Iraqi Karaoke (based on her stage play). Sherry is also a fiction writer and an educator. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and her work is published by Anvil Press.

Asta Hokamaa is a playwriter and dramaturgy living in Helsinki. She graduated with a masters of theater art 2012 from Theater University of Helsinki. Since that she has been working as a freelancer in the theater field. She has been writing plays and performance scripts as well. Asta is also a performance dramaturgy and director. Right now, she is writing a movie script. She has been teaching writing and worked with vulnerable groups like prisoners.
As she continues to write, Asta is very interested in the structures of plays and its totally fantastic try to find “right” ones each of plays. Themes which she explores are for example Non Violent communication, double standards, cognitive distortions, soul of city, nagging…
She is a great fan of natural waters and swimming around the seasons at the sea. Asta has a lovely dachshund and her hobbies are volunteering work at the streets, yoga and gym.
