Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and raised in the Maritimes, Catherine Joell MacKinnon is an award winning filmmaker, ASL Coach, Actor, Theatre performer and playwright.
ACTRA Woman of the Year Award recipient in 2016.
Catherine was beyond thrilled to take part in Playwrights Theatre Centre, in Vancouver and developed a solo play, a work in progress title, Evermind with dramaturg Heidi Taylor and later stages in script writing with Peter Hinton Davis. A stage reading took place at the Sound Off festival in Edmonton that lead to meeting Heidi in 2019. As a performer, selected Theatre Credits: Silence (Grand Theatre & National Arts Centre), After The Blackout (Rare Theatre/Soulpepper), ASLImprov (DeafWest Theatre), ASL Deaf Interpreter: Ultrasound (Cahoots Theatre), The Enchanted Loom (Cahoots Theatre & Factory Theatre) and selected Film/TV Credits: Cat’s Got Your Tongue, Murdoch Mysteries, Kenny Vs Spenny, Silent Hill. She also worked as an ASL dramaturg and consultant on At this Hour, Zuppa Theatre, (Nov/Dec 2021) and bug by Yolanda Bonnell at Theatre Passe Muraille, & Manidoons Collective, (Feb 2020). Catherine was the only Canadian producer, for the American indie The Hammer, (2010) feature film biopic of Matt “Hammer” Hamill. The film won 8 Audience Choice Film Festivals awards. Catherine was part of a ground breaking show entitled Breaking Character on AMI (2023). She was an ASL Coach & Continuity for Fargo (Season one, 2014, Emmy & Golden Globe winner for “Best limited series, or motion picture made for television”) Catherine returned as ASL Coach for Season three (2017) in addition to ASL Coaching she also worked on the feature horror film, The Silence and Season 2 of TITANS.
