William Lottering
William Lottering’s plays often touch on the absurd with topics drawn from social issues such as physical challenges, mental illness, homelessness, opposition of forces and art history. To date, he has written seven plays and an Afrikaans novel. Will also designed sets for drama and ballet performances. These days, he writes full-time, facilitates arts workshops and is a regular speaker on contemporary arts topics.
In the first part of his life, Will worked at the South African Broadcasting Corporation as radio announcer and producer. It was a prolific decade in which he wrote countless scripts, conducted interviews, worked in television, dubbed TV series, provided voice for advertisements and directed dramas. During this period, Will wrote his first two plays, End of the Line and The Dam, which were aired on Afrikaans national radio. After immigrating to Canada, Lottering continued writing dramas while designing sets and lighting for productions such as Anything Goes!, Oliver!, A Servant of Two Masters, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Wiz, as well as for Peter Stanton Dance Academy performances. In 2014, Will became an arts consultant for the York Region District School Board, where he advised Visual Arts, Dance and Drama teachers. A highlight was organizing two massive York Region-wide visual arts and performing arts events to commemorate the centenary of WWI. In 2023, he co-founded Easy Street Players.
