Charles Hayter
Charles Hayter is a Toronto-based physician, medical historian, playwright and performer who identifies with the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Prior to medical school, he studied drama at Queen’s University (BAH) and the University of Calgary (MA). Throughout his medical career, he continued to write and perform in the theatre, including work informed by his knowledge of medicine and medical history. Writing credits include: Eldorado Town (4th Line Theatre); Lady-in-Waiting, about a drag queen with a secret life as a doctor (winner of the award for best solo show at the Fresh Fruit Festival in NYC); Radical, developed through the New Ideas Festival at Alumnae Theatre and produced in Alumnae’s FireWorks Festival; and MotherLoad (co-written with Brian Cope), a sleeper hit of the 2018 Rhubarb Festival at Buddies. Charles has studied playwriting with Brad Fraser, clown with Act 2 Studio (TMU), libretto-writing with Tapestry Opera, and solo storytelling with Tracey Erin Smith. His most recent book is Cancer Confidential: Backstage Dramas in the Radiation Clinic (University of Toronto Press), in which he uses a theatrical lens to probe the cancer experience of patients and caregivers.
