Gil Garratt

Gil grew up splitting time between Scarborough’s Agincourt neighbourhood, and the Northern Ontario town of Sundridge. A graduate of the National Theatre School’s playwriting program, Gil’s work has been produced across Canada, and translated into French.
From early experimental work in indie festivals (Severe Blow to the Head, Enter the Chicken) to the mainstage of the Blyth Festival Theatre, (Saving Graceland, St Anne’s Reel) Gil has been writing plays for more than thirty years. Much of Gil’s career has also been dedicated to Collective Creation, with multiple successful collaborations with artists like Paul Thompson, Hillar Liitoja, Severn Thompson, and others. Much of Gil’s work explores themes of class, family, community and alienation.
Also a performer, and director Gil has appeared on major stages across Canada, and abroad. Gil has been the artistic director of the Blyth Festival since 2014. New Play Development and commissioning writers is the cornerstone of Blyth’s work.
