Douglas Abel
Douglas Abel is a playwright, director, actor, theatre historian, and drama teacher. He studied acting in England and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He taught for ten years at the University of Waterloo and Ryerson Theatre School, before moving to Fort McMurray, Alberta, where for nineteen years he was an instructor and drama program head at Keyano College. Since his retirement to Vancouver in 2009, he has remained active as an actor, writer and acting coach. He has had articles published on Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus; actors Edmund Kean, R. H. Thompson and Martha Henry; and playwrights Ibsen and Strindberg. He wrote a regular column, “Soliloquy,” for Theatre Alberta News and now writes a similar column, “Marginalia,” for NorthWord magazine. Douglas received the Wood Buffalo Cultural achievement award in 2002, an Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005 and the Keyano College Students’ Association Faculty member of the Year award in 2006.
