Journey of an Emerging Fringe Playwright

March 15 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Join Rachel Renaud, winner of The Most Promising English Text Award for their play, Love the Sinner, showcased at the 2024 Montreal Fringe Festival and Finalist of the RBC Emerging Playwright Award presented at the 2024 PGC’s Tom Hendry Awards, for a 20 to 30 minute online reading of their award-winning play followed by a 30 minute Q&A session with the playwright themself, delving into their journey in writing the play and speaking to Rachel about their experiences at the Montreal Fringe Festival and then being listed for a national award.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Love the Sinner is a hard-hitting dramatic two-hander with absurdist elements following the joint unraveling of high school sweethearts Lenna (a devout Catholic) and Elle (a shy stoner) when Elle comes out as trans. It explores religious indoctrination, the nuance of teen love, and the abuse that unhealed trauma can catalyze.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Rachel Renaud is a non-binary writer and actor who has lived and worked in Canada’s three major cities. Their pieces often lean into complex human nuances and uncomfortable topics. Most recently, they’ve written and performed in their award-winning short film, Convalescence, and they are currently in development (funded by Canada Council) for their feature film, Soulmates. Love the Sinner is their first full-length play.

ABOUT PLAYCONNECT: PGC’s PlayConnect program supports live or in-person playwright readings across the country. The goal is to engage the public in hearing Canadian works for the stage read by the authors.
