Submissions are open to Supporting and Student members of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing, who have never had a professional production and have never been full members of PGC.
The submitted play must be at least 60-minutes in length.
The play has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1st 2026. The play may have been workshopped, but it hasn’t received a full production. If the work has been produced for a Fringe Festival, it is considered eligible. Please contact PGC for plays that have been selected for further production (e.g. Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Festival or juried festivals such as SummerWorks).
The play has not been published.
The play must be written in English.
Theatre for Young Audience plays will not be accepted.
Musicals will not be accepted
Plays submitted to the RBC Award are eligible to also be submitted to either the Drama OR Comedy award. Separate submission form and fee apply.
The play must be an original work.
Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator(s)
Translations are accepted. Please note: If the winning play is an English translation and both creators are PGC members, the playwright and translator will split the award.
Permission for any copyrighted material included in the play must be obtained.

You pay the $21.50 non-refundable entry fee
You provide a PDF copy of your script.
Your script has page numbers throughout.
Your script has NO identifying features on ANY page. Identifying features include name(s) of creator(s), thank you’s, acknowledgements, dedications, names of theatres, workshops, funders, etc. Ensure you check every page of the document.
You upload any music included in your play as PDF, MP3, MP4 or WAV files. PGC will not accept YouTube, Vimeo links. The music must also conform to the removal of identifying features. If your play does not include music, you still must check this box in order to proceed.
You understand that incorrect or incomplete submissions will not be considered for an award.
You understand that once you make your submission to this award, you may not make requests to change, update or otherwise alter any part of the submission. You would need to redo the entire submission process (including the fee)
You have the right to ask for the submission to be withdrawn until June 1, 2026. You understand that after Mar 15, 2026, the assessment panel may have seen the submission.
You have not/will not submit the same script to more than one category. (Please note the RBC Emerging Playwright Award exemption online)
You understand the criteria of the award and the parameters for submission.

Reading Feature. As an augment to the Tom Hendry Awards 2026, the three (3) finalists of the Emerging Playwright Award may be invited have a short segment of their nominated work featured in a public reading. (location and dates yet to be determined, likely Fall 2026 or Winter 2027) The selected artists would be paired with directors and actors in preparation for the reading. The playwrights are invited to attend the reading and participate in a Q & A with the audience following the readings. Any travel expenses would be covered by PGC. The recipients will be announced at the Tom Hendry Awards event in October 2026.

The Canadian PlayOutlet: We encourage you to submit your play to the PGC's Play Distribution Program, making your play available in digital format for sale through the Canadian Play Outlet (canadianplayoutlet.com). Details are online. (https://playwrightsguild.ca/play-distribution-program/ ). There is no obligation to participate in the Play Distribution Program.

This program is free of charge to the playwright. PGC members earn royalties (25% of sales). Lapsed members earn royalties (10% of sales). Royalties are calculated annually.
