Florence practiced medicine in the Arctic, Hong Kong and East Africa.

Her play Belle was short-listed for a British Council International Playwriting Award, nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award, and won a Chalmers Award. It received productions in London, England and the Lincoln Centre, New York.

Home is My Road won the Carol Bolt Award. Missing won the Herman Voaden National Award. I think I can, her hit tap dance play with choreographer Shawn Byfield, was nominated for five Dora Awards and won for Outstanding New Musical. How Do I Love Thee? was nominated for a Betty Award, five Dora Awards and produced at Moses Znaimer’s Ideacity. Augury won the ATP/Enbridge Award.

Florence has written for CBC Radio. Her plays are published by Playwrights Canada Press with excerpts in many anthologies. Her short stories appear in Grain, Fiddlehead, The Dalhousie Review, the 2020 Journey Prize, North Dakota Review. She is writing a novel based on the Brownings.
