Janet Irwin was born in Cornwall Ontario, and has worked in Canadian Theatre since 1976. She is a freelance director, playwright and producer of new work through Easy Street Productions. Her main affiliations are Odyssey Theatre, National Arts Centre English Theatre, St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival and Great Canadian Theatre Company. She has written stage adaptations of works by Canadian novelist Brian Doyle (Up to Low, Angel Square); Mary Ann Alice’s They All Do It, inspired by Da Ponte’s libretto for Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte; and A Seaway Story. She also wrote opera libretti – Angel Square for Opera Lyra, Ottawa, and The River for Caravan Stage-barge.
She received the Victor Tolgesy award for outstanding contribution to the Arts in Ottawa, is a Life Member of Canadian Actors’ Equity, was named Woman of Distinction for the YMCA-YWCA, and was inducted into the Cornwall Arts Hall of Fame.
