Shelley M. Hobbs is a hearing-impaired non-binary lesbian cancer survivor who plays hockey and loves nature. Born in Winnipeg, raised in Thunder Bay, Shelley writes plays about chosen family and the harsh choices that need to be made to survive trauma. Shelley was the recipient of the 2020 Louise Garfield Award. Shelley was part of the 2020 Write From the Hip program in which her play, Refusal, was presented in online form as part of Nightwood Theatre’s Groundswell Festival. Shelley’s previous work includes A Good Death (AKA Theatre, 2018); Happy Family (Toronto Fringe 2017); and two plays developed through the Ergo Arts Pinkfest program: The Sister Op (2018) and Monkey Wrench (2019). The latter also received a workshop performance through Alumnae Theatre’s Big Ideas Festival (2019). Shelley lives in Toronto, Ontario with her wife, Joan Jamieson, and is the artistic director of Bossy Sparrow Theatre.
