Liza Balkan is a Canadian theatre artist and educator with a career that spans over four decades. Her documentary project, Out The Window, created through a residency at The Theatre Centre, was produced at Toronto’s International Luminato Festival and published by Sirocco/JG Shillingford. Recent music collaborations include writing the libretto for composer Brian Current’s multi – Dora Award nominated Gould’s Wall, Lembit Beecher’s song cycles After the Fires and Looking at Spring, produced by Brooklyn Art Song Society, and her song cycle with composer Paul Shilton, So, How’s it Been?, created through interviews during the pandemic. Favourite directing credits include Every Brilliant Thing with Rebecca Northan (the Grand, London), Anaïs Nin starring Wallis Giunta (Koerner Hall/RCM), Much Ado About Nothing (CanadianStage/Shakespeare in High Park), and Mustard (UWaterloo). Liza is a Dora Award – winning actor who has worked, played and created on stages across Canada and in the US. She received her MFA through York University/Canadian Stage and has a full and joyful practice as an Educator in Canada and the UAE.
