The Lifetime Membership Award
This award recognizes a playwright for a body of work, and/or service to Playwrights Guild of Canada and the theatre community. All current members of Playwrights Guild of Canada are welcome to forward nominations for Lifetime Membership.
Nominations will reopen in February 2025 and the recipient will be announced in Fall 2025.

Honorary Membership Award
Honorary membership is awarded to an [non-playwright] individual or organization for their contribution to the Canadian playwright community. Nominations are accepted from PGC members.

Overall submission guidelines:
- Late submissions will not be accepted.
- No refunds will be given for incomplete or incorrect submissions.
- PGC cannot provide feedback on applications submitted.
- Incomplete submissions will not be considered for an award. Once an entry has been submitted, it cannot be changed, updated, or otherwise altered. Entrants seeking to correct errors or provide updates must re-submit using the same process as the original submission, including the fee.
- The form cannot accept files larger than 10 MB. If your files are large than 10 MB, please send via WeTransfer to marketing@playwrightsguild.ca
- If you would like to discuss your submission with staff, please do so before Mar 15, 2024 4pm Eastern. Staff do not work evenings or weekends. Contact marketing@playwrightsguild.ca

- With the exception of the Carol Bolt Award, all submitted plays are reviewed without the author’s name or any identifying information.
Carol Bolt Award
Prize: $5000
Entry fee: $24.50/play
This is given annually to a new script which has premiered (live on stage or full length digital) between April 4, 2023 and Mar 21, 2024. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel. The recipient of the Carol Bolt Award has the option to be published.
The Carol Bolt award is generously sponsored by Playwrights Canada Press, Scirocco Drama, Alberta Playwrights’ Network, Manitoba Association of Playwrights (MAP), Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre (PARC), Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal, The Playwrights Theatre Centre, and Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre.
Carol Bolt Award Submission Guidelines:
- The playwright must be a full member of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing.
- Be a minimum of 60 minutes in length.
- The play will have had a premiere production by a professional theatre company between April 3rd, 2023 and March 1st, 2024.
- The 2024 Awards will also accept full length digital premiere productions by a professional theatre company. (Please note, should you submit a digital premiere production for the 2024 award season, should that piece receive a live staged premiere production in the future, that submission will not be accepted.)
- Be written in English or be a Canadian production of a play translated in to English.
- An original work
- Permission for any copyrighted material has been obtained
- Theatre for Young Audiences plays are not accepted. There is a separate award for TYA applications.
- Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator.
- If there is more than one author (including co-writer, composer, etc) all authors must be included on the application form, but only one must be a full member of PGC.
- If you are submitting a musical, provide a recording of at least 5 different song excerpts. Total running time of music can not exceed ten minutes.
- The creator’s name should be visible on the script.
- If music is included, written permission(s) must be provided for the use of the music in the script for which the playwright is not the sole creator.
- Any recordings do not need to be professionally recorded (piano & vocals will suffice). This is to give the jury an idea of tone. Each song selection should be under 1 (one) minute and in .wav format
- There can be no hyperlinks in your script.
- You may only submit a play once to the Carol Bolt Award.

Dan School of Drama & Music Musical Award
Prize: $5000
Entry fee: $24.50/play
This award is given annually for a new musical work which has not yet had a premiere production. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel. The recipient will receive an invitation to participate in Queen’s University’s Watershed Festival.
The award is generously sponsored by the Dan School of Drama & Music, at Queen’s University.
Dan School of Drama and Music Musical Award Submission Guidelines:
- The playwright must be a full or supporting member of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing. (Faculty of Queen’s University and The Dan School of Drama & Music are not permitted to apply for this award.).
- The play must be a minimum of 60 minutes in length.
- The play has not yet had a premiere production as of March 1st, 2024. The play could have been workshopped, but it hasn’t had a professional production. If it has been produced during the Fringe it is still considered eligible. Please contact PGC for plays that have been selected for further production (i.e. Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Festival) or juried festivals such as SummerWorks.
- The work must be written in English or be an English translation. Please note: If the winning play is an English translation and both creators are PGC members, the playwright and translator will split the award evenly.
- Theatre for Young Audience musicals will be accepted.
- You cannot submit this musical to any other award category.
- An original work.
- Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator.
- Plays that have been submitted in prior years are ineligible unless substantial changes have been made. (exception: Carol Bolt Award)
- Provide recordings of 5 sections from various songs, (up to 10 minutes maximum of total music submitted). NOTE: The sections do not need to represent 5 different songs. The recordings do not need to be professionally recorded (piano & vocals will suffice). This is to give the jury an idea of tone.
- All scripts and song selections are reviewed as unattributed submissions. This means that all names and identifying features must be removed prior to submission.
- There can be no hyperlinks in your script.

The Dorothy Lees-Blakey Theatre for Young Audiences Award
Prize: $5000
Entry fee: $24.50/play
This award is given annually for a new or recently premiered theatre for young audiences (TYA) play. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel.
The award is generously supported by the Estate of Dorothy Lees-Blakey.
Dorothy Lees-Blakey Theatre for Young Audiences Award Submission Guidelines:
- This play must be intended for young audiences.
- The main applicant must be a full or supporting member of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing.
- The play must be a minimum of 30 minutes in length.
- The play may have had a premiere production between April 3rd, 2023 and March 1st, 2024 OR is a brand new script with no production history.
- The play must be written in English or be an English translation.
- The play must be an original work or an adaptation.
- Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator.
- Permission for any copyrighted material has been obtained.
- Musicals are not accepted. If your submission is a musical, please submit to the Dan School of Drama & Music Musical Award. TYA musicals are accepted for the Dan School of Drama & Music Musical Award.
- You cannot submit this play for any other award category.
- Plays that have been submitted in prior years are ineligible unless substantial changes have been made
- If there is more than one author (including co-writer, composer, etc) all authors must be included on the application form, but only one must be a full member of PGC.
- If music is included, written permission(s) must be provided for the use of the music in the script for which the playwright is not the sole creator.

RBC Emerging Playwright Award
1st Place: $2500 2nd Place: $1500 3rd Place: $1000
Entry fee: $21.50/play
This award is given annually for a new unpublished, unproduced work by an emerging playwright. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel. The 1st place recipient will also receive a 6-month mentorship.
The award is generously sponsored by the RBC Emerging Artist Program.
RBC Emerging Playwright Award Submission Guidelines:
- Submissions are open for Supporting and Student members of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing who have never had a professional production and have never been full members of PGC.
- The playwright (and the play) must not yet have had a professional production. The play could have been workshopped, but it hasn’t had a professional production. If it has been produced during the Fringe it is still considered eligible. Please contact PGC for plays that have been selected for further production (i.e. Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Festival) or juried festivals such as SummerWorks.
- The play needs to be a minimum of 60 minutes in length.
- The play must be written in English or be an English translation.
- Theatre for Young Audience plays will not be accepted. There is another award for TYA applicants.
- The play can either be an original work or an adaptation.
- Adaptations must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator.
- Permission for any copyrighted material needs to have been obtained prior to submitting. PGC staff can request proof of permission at any time during the submission and jury process.
- Musicals are not accepted. If your submission is a musical, please submit to the Dan School of Drama & Music Musical Award.
- Plays that have been submitted in prior years are ineligible unless substantial changes have been made.
- If there is more than one author or a collective creative, at least one (1) must be a member of PGC.
- If music is included, written permission(s) must be provided for the use of the music in the script for which the playwright is not the sole creator.

The Comedy Award is given annually to a new, unpublished and unproduced play. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel.

- The playwright must be a full or supporting member of Playwrights Guild of Canada in good standing.
- Be a minimum of 60 minutes in length.
- The play has not yet had a premiere production as of March 1st, 2024. The play could have been workshopped, but it hasn’t had a full production. If it has been produced during the Fringe it is still considered eligible. Please contact PGC for plays that have been selected for further production (i.e. Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Festival) or juried festivals such as SummerWorks.

The Drama Award is given annually to a new, unpublished and unproduced play. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel.
Drama Award Submission Guidelines:
- The playwright must be a full or supporting member of PGC in good standing.
- The submitted play must be at least 60-minutes in length.
- The play has not yet had a professional premiere production as of March 1st 2024. The play may have been workshopped, but it hasn’t received a full production. If the work has been produced for a Fringe Festival, it is considered eligible. Please contact PGC for plays that have been selected for further production (e.g. Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Festival or juried festivals such as SummerWorks).
- The play has not been published.
- The play must be written in English or be a play translated into English. Please note: If the winning play is an English translation and both creators are PGC members, the playwright and translator will split the award.
- Theatre for Young Audience plays, Musicals, Comedies, and anything submitted to the RBC Emerging Playwright Award will not be accepted. Please look at those separate awards if one of them is more suited for your play.
- The play must be an original work.
- Permission for any copyrighted material included in the play must be obtained.
- Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator(s).
- Plays that have been submitted in prior years are ineligible unless substantial changes have been made.
- If music is included, written permission(s) must be provided for the use of the music in the script for which the playwright is not the sole creator.

John Palmer Award
Prize: $5000
Entry fee: $24.50/play
An award winning playwright, theatre director and filmmaker, John Palmer was never afraid to shake things up. As a champion of home-grown Canadian theatre, he made a career out of it. As a teacher and mentor, John was drawn towards young artists who rejected conventional ideas, and he inspired them to make art that agitated the mainstream.
The John Palmer Award accepts nominations for emerging playwrights whose work challenges the status quo and fosters intergenerational friendships. Three finalists will be selected by a peer assessment panel. The recipient of the John Palmer Award receives $5,000.
The award is generously supported by the family, friends, and colleagues of John Palmer.
The John Palmer Award Submission Guidelines:
- The Nominator must be a member in good standing with Playwrights Guild of Canada.
- The Nominator is an experienced theatre creator with 25+ years of experience.
- The Nominee does not need to be a member of Playwrights Guild of Canada.
- The Nominee is someone who identifies as a storyteller for the stage, is practicing (primarily) in Canada, and has less than 10 years of experience.
- The Nominee has been involved in at least one staged production as a playwright or director.
- The Nominee is someone who uses their artistic practice to disrupt the status quo.
- The Award package must include:
- A nominator’s statement with a 250-word limit
- A bio for the nominator
- An artistic statement from the nominee with a 500-word limit
- A CV for the nominee
- A bio for the nominee
- Two letters of artistic reference for the nominee based upon the criteria of the award (these two letters of reference are an addition to the nominator’s letter)
- The Nominator and Nominee should each address how the candidate mirrors the vision of the award.
- The award is not tied to a specific project or artistic work. It is intended as career support, with no budget or reporting requirements.
- Complete nomination packages must be submitted as per PGC’s online awards guidelines.
- The winner of this award, and the nominator, will be asked to join PGC for a recorded interview/discussion in October 2024, to chat about their artistic practice and to celebrate intergenerational collaboration or friendship in the theatre community. Highlights may be aired during PGC’s 2025 Tom Hendry Awards events.

Robert Beardsley Award For Young Playwrights
Prize: $500
Entry fee: $21.50/play
This award is granted to a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in Ontario for the creation of a one-act play script. The entrant to the competition must be a playwright under the age of 30 at time of submission, and residing in or going to school in Ontario. Three finalists will be selected by a panel of established playwrights. The winner is awarded a play reading at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto and a PGC student membership.
Applicants for this award do not need to be PGC members.
The award is generously sponsored by the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto Foundation.
The Robert Beardsley Award Submission Guidelines:
- Applicants for this award need to be under the age of 30 at time of submission, reside within the Province of Ontario, and be a full time secondary or post-secondary student.
- Applicants for this award DO NOT need to be PGC members.
- This award is for one-act plays of no more than 60 minutes performance length.
- Plays must not have been previously staged except at school readings. The receipt of all submissions will be acknowledged electronically.
- The submitted play can be an original work, a translation (see note below), or an adaptation.
- The submitted play must be written in English or be an English translation.
- Adaptations are accepted, but must involve substantial changes in form and/or expression. If the adapted work is not in the public domain, the playwright must include written permission from the original creator.
- Permission for any copyrighted material needs to be obtained before submission.
- If there is more than one author (including co-writer, composer, etc) all authors must be included on the application form.
- If you are submitting a play with music, you can provide up to 5 music samples.
- Plays that have been submitted in prior years are ineligible unless substantial changes have been made.
- If music is included, written permission(s) must be provided for the use of the music in the script for which the playwright is not the sole creator.
- All scripts and song selections are reviewed as unattributed submissions. This means that all names and identifying features must be removed prior to submission.

PlayConnect information for Playwrights

PGC PlayConnect Policies and Procedures
If a playwright opts to participate in the PlayConnect program, the program operates with the following overall policies and procedures:
General:
- PGC will contact playwright(s) requested by a host to verify interest and availability.
- If the project is approved, PGC will send an agreement to be completed by the playwright(s).
- Refusing a particular request will have no effect on future requests.
- All communications regarding agreements, marketing, invoicing and policies with the host will be with PGC.
- Once set, the event date/time will not be changed to accommodate other commitments.
- A playwright will be paid $275+tax (if applicable) for a Solo Long reading.
- A playwright will be paid $150+tax (if applicable) for a Solo Short reading.
- A playwright will be paid $150+tax (if applicable) for a Panel reading.
- If transportation is approved as part of the event, PGC will provide the playwright(s) with the maximum amount for the project within their agreement.
- Transportation subsidy for a reading will not be more than $600.
- Playwright(s) are responsible for reading the Transportation Guidelines.
Payment:
- Playwright(s) will provide PGC with electronic banking information to facilitate payments. If you have NOT been paid by PGC in the past, please complete the banking form.
- Playwright(s) will provide PGC their SIN before any payments will be issued.
- Playwright(s) will provide PGC with an HST # (if applicable).
- PGC will pay the provincial/territorial tax in which the activity takes place. For online activities, PGC will pay the HST rate for the playwright’s home province/territory.
- PGC will issue T4As annually in accordance with CRA regulations.
- PGC will only reimburse transportation allowance upon the submission of the travel form

Play Distribution Program

PGC Play Distribution Program Procedures
Payment:
- Script royalties for current PGC members are 25%.
- Script royalties for lapsed PGC members are 10%.
- Royalties are paid annually, if the amount is $20 or over.
- Every three years, PGC will pay out all royalties (regardless of the $20 minimum). Est. 2025, 2028, 2031, etc.
- Playwright/executor will provide PGC with electronic banking information to facilitate [Canadian dollar] royalty payments.
- Playwright/executor will provide PGC their SIN before any royalty payments will be issued.
- Playwright/executor will provide/update PGC with their current contact information.
- PGC will issue T5s annually in accordance with CRA regulations.
- ESTATES: Executor will provide appropriate Will/Literary Estate paperwork clearly outlining the name(s) responsible for decisions regarding rights, and name(s) of those to receive royalties, including any details about splitting royalties, if applicable.
- PGC will split royalty payments equally between co-creators, unless we receive signed, dated paperwork indicating otherwise.
- PGC will pay each rights holder directly.

Amateir Rights Program Procedures
Payment:
- Playwright/executor will provide PGC with electronic banking information to facilitate [Canadian dollar] royalty payments.
- Playwright/executor will provide PGC their SIN before any royalty payments will be issued.
- Playwright/executor will provide/update PGC with their current contact information.
- PGC will issue T5s annually in accordance with CRA regulations.
- ESTATES: Executor will provide appropriate Will/Literary Estate paperwork clearly outlining the name(s) responsible for decisions regarding rights, and name(s) of those to receive royalties, including any details about splitting royalties if applicable.
- PGC will split royalty payments equally between co-creators, unless we receive signed, dated paperwork indicating otherwise.
- PGC will pay each rights holder directly.
PGC is aware there may be changing circumstances which affect the decisions to approve rights and will contact playwrights as necessary. Playwrights Guild of Canada will handle each contract with the following policies and procedures:
- PGC will determine a flat rate or percentage after reviewing the request.
- PGC will include the recommended rates and all provided request details when forwarding a request for approval.
- Playwright/executor can request that PGC attempt to negotiate alternative rates with the producer.
- Playwright/executor retains full right of refusal each time a request is forwarded.
- Refusing a particular request will have no effect on future requests.
- If a playwright/executor approves a request, PGC will administer contracts utilising the agreed upon parameters.
- Box office reports from the producer (if required) are to PGC due 14 days after closing.
- Royalty payments from the producer are due to PGC 30 days after submission of the box office report.
- PGC may charge interest or late charges to producers in arrears.
- PGC will pay royalties to the playwright/estate within 90 days after closing.
- If the company pays in Canadian dollars, royalties will be paid in CDN. If the company pays in US dollars, royalties will be paid in USD.
- PGC will charge the producer sales tax applicable to the location in which the activity takes place. If the playwright/estate is GST/HST registered, PGC will pay the royalties with the same tax rate as collected.

Creator Exchange
The purpose of Creator Exchanges is to encourage networking opportunities with other theatre practitioners and to forge new working relationships.They are an opportunity for playwrights to talk briefly about what kind of work inspires them and how they like to collaborate artistically.

Craft Bites International
PGC pairs playwrights to read 10-minute excerpts of their work, followed by an artistic discussion. The sessions are held online and are open to audiences. Audience members may participate in the open Q&A portion of the event. Each session is one hour long and facilitated by a PGC staff member. Craft Bites International pairs a Canadian playwright with a playwright from another country for readings and conversations in English.
Applicants will be required to:
- Provide a bio
- Provide a headshot
- Provide the title of their work
- Provide a brief description of the work
- Indicate their availability
- Provide self identification (as willing)
Applications will be reviewed by a panel. The panel will work to create the most artistically appropriate pairings. Priority will be given to new participants to Craft Bites. The panel will consider information provided by applicants to ensure opportunities for those identifying with historically underrepresented groups.
PGC will:
- Pair each selected applicant with a playwright from one of our international partner organizations
- Provide a date and time (as per their indicated availability). PGC cannot accommodate schedule changes.
- Pay $150 for their participation after the session, as per PGC’s supplier payment schedule
- Issue T4As in accordance with CRA guidelines
Selected applicants will:
- Provide PGC with electronic banking information to facilitate payments
- Provide PGC their SIN before any payments will be issued
- Participate in their session
- Complete a program feedback form
