Playwrights Guild of Canada is excited to have Brad Fraser back to lead two playwriting workshops. Brad is offering “Playwriting for Beginners” as well as “The Power of the Re-write.” Both classes have six sessions (once a week for six weeks), each session running for two and a half hours. Please read the workshop descriptions below to see which one suits your playwriting needs.
Applications will close on May 1st.
This freewheeling unit is designed for those who are thinking about writing a play but are not sure where to start. The basic elements of script writing will be explored through examples, discussion and in-class exercises in a casual but focused atmosphere.
No experience or support materials are required but if participants have up to ten pages of writing samples to submit, preferably in script format, that will be helpful.
The class is six two hour sessions. Participants will be expected to take part in all discussions, write in-class exercises and read a number of plays. This list will be distributed to participants upon acceptance to the class.
SCHEDULE: Every Wednesday from May 16th – June 20th (6-8:30pm)
Maximum 12 participants.
This intense, individually focused unit is designed for those who have completed at least one draft of a play and are looking to expand and improve it. Through group discussion and instructor analysis, participants will be expected to explore and hone their craft and their script as they undergo a series of out-of-class revisions with feedback that is contextually specific to each play.
All participants must have a complete draft of a play they wish to improve by utilizing the feedback of a professional and others. Production history and professional experience are unimportant. Applicants must submit ONLY the first ten pages of their play and a resume to apply. Those accepted will be asked to submit their entire play.
The class is six two hour sessions. Participants will be expected to read the work of other participants, engage in constructive discussions of all work, and undergo a series of weekly rewrite sessions (on their own time) that can be read by the group for the next week’s session.
SCHEDULE: Every Monday from May 14th – June 18th (6-8:30pm)
Because of the wider focus of this class participants will be restricted to no more than 8.
