QC’s Micheline Chevrier Wins National Award from PGC

National The winners of the Tom Hendry Awards were announced at a digital awards ceremony hosted by Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC) on Sunday, October 24th. You can watch the show anytime on PGC’s YouTube Channel. The annual Tom Hendry Awards celebrate and recognize playwrights and theatre-creators across the country for excellent, new work. Hosted by the magnificent Carmen Aguirre, PGC’s ceremony involved ten award presentations in the following categories: Drama, Comedy, Musical, Theatre for Young Audiences, Emerging Artist, Young Writer, Career Achievement, and a special award to support a South African woman playwright. (The names of the awards are the Playwrights Guild Drama Award, Chris Tolley & Dharini Woollcombe Award, Dan School of Drama & Music Award, Sharon Enkin Plays for Young People Award, RBC Emerging Playwright Award, Robert Beardsley Award, Bra d’Or Award, Honorary Membership Award, the Lifetime Membership Award, and the CASA Award).

PGC congratulates Micheline Chevrier, Artistic and Executive Director of Montreal’s Imago Theatre, for winning the 2021 Bra d’Or Award in the category of career achievement. This accolade is bestowed upon a person who has helped amplify, celebrate, and support the work of women playwrights in Canada. Ms. Chevrier is an award-winning practitioner who has worked as an artistic director, director, dramaturg, stage manager, teacher, and mentor in Canada and abroad for the past 40 years. Her nominators describe her as “a force in Canadian theatre” whose “socially-relevant, feminist work” has “transformed the Montreal theatre community.”

As Keith Barker (Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts) and Yolanda Bonnell stated at PGC’s Nominee Gala: “We’re made of stories – let’s hear more of those stories.” Ms. Chevrier echoed this sentiment last night in her acceptance speech for the Bra d’Or Award:

“The reason I got into theatre was because I wanted to tell stories, and I believe that stories are our saviors. They are a reflection of who we are, of what we need, and they are an essential service. […] For as long as I can remember, my greatest inspirations in theatre have been the playwrights, the writers; the ones who are brave, who expose their hearts and their souls to us in order to discuss really important matters, in order to ask us to reflect, to provoke us to change, to change ourselves, and to change the world. […] My work only exists because of their bravery, and so thank you to all of you who write, and who ask us to make a difference.”

PGC congratulates Micheline Chevrier on her Bra d’Or Award, and all the 2021 award recipients. The 2021 Tom Hendry Awards virtual ceremony is available to watch on PGC’s YouTube Channel where host, Carmen Aguirre, chats with the shortlisted playwrights and award recipients.
