The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in African and/or Afro-Caribbean Theatre. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek a candidate with a specialization in African and/or Afro-Caribbean theatre and performance practices. Demonstrated knowledge of critical methodologies informed by Indigenous, post-colonial, critical race, feminist, or queer thought is particularly welcome. Experience with research methodologies based in ethnography, dance studies, disability studies or community-based praxis would be welcome. We seek candidates whose demonstrated excellence in research and teaching complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths (https://www.cdtps.utoronto.ca/research). The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
The candidate will be joining a vibrant scholarly community at the Centre, committed to anti-racist research and pedagogy. In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses related to their area of specialization, the successful candidate will also teach core curricular courses in theatre and performance history, theory, and practice and we look forward to evidence of those strengths/experiences in the application.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as the aforementioned strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
