“Femme Folks Fest PlayConnect Playwright Reading Series” featuring Rose Cullis, Camille Intson, Michaela Jeffery

March 12 @ 12:00 am - March 20 @ 12:00 am EST

Femme Folks Fest PlayConnect Playwright Reading Series

Join us as we present our Festival Playwright in Residence, Festival Company in Residence and members of our 2021 Women’s Room as they read from their work in an intimate virtual setting. It’s a wonderful chance to get a first-look into their newest creations and their process of creation. Each reading will be followed by a Playwright Talkback and audience Q&A lead by Lisa O’Connell, Artistic Director of Pat the Dog Theatre Creation. Support for the Festival Playwright Reading Series has been provided through the PlayConnect Program administered by the Playwrights Guild of Canada with funding provided by Canada Council for the Arts.

Patchface: A switchboard operator becomes intimately involved in the affairs of a young couple when she overhears, and participates in, a series of telephonic exchanges between them. Patchface is a play about technology, intimacy, desire, communication, and the space between these things.

Untitled VR Sex Play: A quirky computer science student creates a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype that allows its users to stimulate sexual encounters with anyone of their choosing, and sells it on the black market of his college campus.

March 17
MICHAELA JEFFREY W.R.O.L. (Without Rule of Law)

In the garage of her suburban duplex, twelve-year-old Josephine makes apocalypse preparedness videos and posts them to YouTube. Vic takes Jujitsu. Maureen encrypts her text messages and hordes matches (because lighters fail). Sarah stuffs her knapsack with extra socks, granola, water filtration tablets and Tolkien novels, because “you don’t know where you’re going to be… when it happens… you might not be at home.”

Convinced the world at large can’t be trusted to prioritize the well-being of adolescent girls in the event of a cataclysmic event (or just in general), this determined troupe of 8th grade ‘doomers’ are committed to preparing for survival in the post -collapse society they anticipate inheriting. Judy Blume meets Rambo, WROL (Without Rule of Law) is a darkly comic coming-of-age story for complicated times.

March 20
ROSE CULLIS The Amazing Grace Jones Spaceship

The Amazing Grace Jones Spaceship is about fluid sexualities and genders, and the perils and pleasures of identity politics. The play is about an older woman (Tuesday) who has a random and life-changing encounter with a younger non-binary person (Charlie) and with their high femme girlfriend (Agnes.) Charlie wants to elude labels and just be, but Agnes is suspicious of Charlie’s politics when Charlie appears to compulsively and aggressively seduce straight women. Tuesday, on the other hand, is eager to explore aspects of herself that are muted. The Amazing Grace Jones Spaceship explores the possibilities of metamorphosis, and the role the imagination plays in our sense of who and what we are.

About Femme Folks Fest

March 8th-20th, Waterloo Region

Welcome to Femme Folks Fest 2021!  A festival dedicated to and in celebration of Women identified or presenting with Productions, Panels, Pop-Ups, Professional Development and more. Celebrated in March worldwide, International Women’s month is a focal point for the championing of women’s rights and gender equality. At present there is no consistent large-scale programming dedicated to Women in Waterloo Region to coincide with International Women’s Month.

Until now.

Femme Folks Fest (FFF) creates space for community to come together and watch performances, engage in conversation, and celebrate the incredible work of femme-identifying artists. The heart of Femme Folks Fest 2021 will be a virtual space built in Gather, and all FFF programming will take place virtually using both Gather and Zoom.

A Femme Folks Fest Pass is available for a Pay-What-You-Will Donation. The FFF Pass gets you access to events and activities including play readings, artist talks, studio tours with our Artists in Residence, after-parties, and plenty of surprises. Please note that free tickets to The Vintage Project need to be reserved separately here.

During the Festival, FFF Pass holders will receive a daily email — the FFF Heart Beat — containing event descriptions and links needed to attend. Femme Folks Fest’s line-up is meant to be experienced in community, with artists and other audience members, and events will occur at a set showtime.

To fully experience Femme Folks Fest 2021 you will need access to a computer (laptop/desktop) that has a camera and microphone. Join us on Gather and engage socially with artists and other audience members throughout the Festival.

FFF Pass holders will be invited to explore Gather pre-Festival at our Run Around and Systems Check!

Gather is a web-browser based virtual platform that combines video-calling with a 2D map that you explore as an Avatar, allowing you to move fluidly, with space to start conversations with those around you. You will be invited to participate in moments of interaction with artists and other audience members throughout Femme Folks Fest. Gather requires a computer (laptop or desktop) and a Chrome or Firefox browser. We recommend wearing headphones.  Please note that Gather is not yet fully supported in mobile (phone/tablet).

For more information please visit How to Gather @ FFF or consult Gather’s Welcome Guide

Zoom can be accessed on a computer (laptop or desktop), iPad, tablet or smartphone. You can also call in to a session on your phone for an audio-only experience. We recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device. To check that you have the most recent version of Zoom, visit: If you are just getting started with Zoom, here is a video guide:
