This virtual play reading event begins at 3:00 PM and runs for one hour including a Q & A session which is an opportunity for the playwrights to answer questions submitted by virtual attendees. This event, delivered virtually via Zoom, will also be live-streamed on 4th Line Theatre’s YouTube channel.

On Thursday, February 10th, playwrights Beverley Cooper and Kristine Greenaway will present readings. Cooper will read from her play in development Jim Watts, Girl Reporter, set in Spain and Toronto in the 1930s, which tells the story of Jim (Jean) Watts, a fiery, non-conventional woman, who is deeply involved in leftist politics and angered by deep income and class disparities endured by millions of people during the Depression. When Civil War breaks out in Spain, Jim is adamant that she should join the side of the democratically elected Socialist government. But can one person make a difference?

Greenaway will read from her play Old Coots Commune, which tells the story of MJ and Alice who have found the ideal house for the commune they want to create for elderly progressive feminist vegan ecologists (a.k.a. “old coots”). But they need at least three people to cover the rent. When a stranger named Sylvia appears claiming she is broke and looking for a place to live, it seems their prayers have been answered. Then they discover a Cartier brooch in Sylvia’s purse. Clearly Sylvia is not who she pretends to be. The arrival of Bill the handyman only complicates matters. How will MJ and Alice ever create a community from this motley crew?

Sponsored by the Playwrights Guild of Canada and 4th Line season sponsor Nexicom, this livestream event is being offered free of charge and is limited to 100 live attendees, on a first-come, first-signed-up basis.
